The first loaders that moved over tracks were tractor-mounted bucket loaders. E. Boydell invented a tiny loader that combined a tractor with a bucket in the 1930s.

After acquiring Trackson in 1951, Caterpillar renamed its crawler loaders Traxcavators. Because it did not use attachments, the company had to design its own loaders. Caterpillar’s No. 6 Traxcavator was the industry’s first fully integrated hydraulic crawler loader.

The first hydraulic bucket was invented in 1946 by the Tractomotive company in Chicago. Allis-Chalmers produced some of the largest crawler tractors after acquiring Tractomotive.

Bucyrus-Erie manufactured hydraulic implements for International Harvester at the same time. Drott had a significant role in International Harvester’s introduction into the crawler loader business. Because of Drott’s clamshell bucket, the loader could function as a loader, scraper, dozer, and clamshell.

A photographer who was photographing one of Holt’s crawler tractors remarked that the rollers resembled a caterpillar from his vantage point. Holt was inspired by the parallel and named his technique after it.
